According to a study released by the Mayo Clinic last month, nearly 70% of Americans are regularly using at least one prescription drug – and more than half of us take two. The most common prescribed medications are, in order, antibiotics, antidepressants, and painkilling opioids, which implies some disturbing trends about prescription practices, says study author Dr. Jennifer St. Sauver.

“The second most common prescription was for antidepressants – that suggests mental health is a huge issue and is something we should focus on,” says Dr. St. Sauver, “and the third most common drugs were opioids, which is a bit concerning considering their addicting nature.” These two types of drugs are the most common among young and middle-aged adults, with both opioids and antidepressants becoming increasingly common among women specifically. Spending on prescription drugs has increased steadily over the past decade and is expected to increase rapidly in the coming years.
